Celebraciones de Año Nuevo terminan en tragedia por disparos al aire y pirotecnia en Tamaulipas
The start of the year 2026 in Tamaulipas, particularly in Reynosa, was marred by a series of violent incidents and accidents during New Year's celebrations. Reports indicate that several individuals were injured by stray bullets and the irresponsible use of fireworks, some of which resulted in serious injuries.
In the central part of the state, particularly Ciudad Victoria and nearby communities, at least three people were confirmed injured from projectiles that fell after being fired into the air during the festivities. Among the cases reported was a young man injured in the ejido Cerrito Nuevo in the municipality of Güémez, and another man who was hit while standing outside his home in the Emilio Caballero neighborhood. Additionally, a young woman was also injured in the Héroes de Nacozari neighborhood.
The violence was not limited to the capital city. In Matamoros, residents reported gunfire in various sectors, particularly in the Casa Blanca III subdivision, where a man was wounded and required hospitalization. There were also reports of projectiles striking homes, but no additional victims were confirmed.
In the sugarcane region, a 62-year-old man was struck by a stray bullet in El Mante while celebrating with his family after the New Year's dinner. Paramedics from Civil Protection transported him to a hospital for medical attention.
One of the most serious incidents occurred in Reynosa, where an 11-year-old girl was rushed to the Materno Infantil Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, allegedly caused by celebratory gunfire. She remains under medical observation.
In addition to gunfire incidents, there were also accidents related to fireworks. In Reynosa, a young man suffered severe hand injuries after a firecracker exploded, while in Xicoténcatl, a nine-year-old boy lost several fingers while handling fireworks in a rural community and was taken to the IMSS for specialized care.
