Omar Guevara Galeana, the commissioner of the community of Tuzantlán in the municipality of Atenango del Río, Guerrero, was shot dead in an ambush. Security sources reported that the armed attack occurred around 6 AM on Sunday on the highway stretch from Huitzuco to the toll booth of the Autopista del Sol, Paso Morelos. Guevara, who was driving a black Nissan Frontier pickup truck accompanied by his family, was intercepted by armed men in an area known as Los Timbres. He sustained gunfire wounds from high-caliber weapons, which led to his death.
As of Sunday night, local and state authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the incident. It is reported that Guevara was returning from a jaripeo (rodeo event) in the neighboring municipality of Huitzuco, where the music group Los Buitres de Culiacán Sinaloa performed. The mayor of Atenango del Río, Emmanuel Guevara Cárdenas, who was nominated by the PT party, downplayed the crime and stated that the closing of the Expo Feria Atenango del Río 2025 would proceed as planned on Sunday without any issues.
